Again, a breakdown here involves a manipulated sample of an excerpt on the electromagnetic spectrum over more driving and distinct speed-bass. “New Skin” – With more genre-mixing, we start again with metal, move to an alt-rock chorus with much less overdrive, contrasting the more “overdriven” disc-scratching that takes the place of a guitar solo. “Vitamin” – What initially begins as a metal song transitions about 2/3 of the way through to a quiet bongo and DJ jam and moves to a waltz final verse with more manipulation on the metal instrumentation. A little of what Incubus will become comes out here (think Make Yourself). After another chorus, we transition to a speedmetal bass solo with funk jump, and a particularly whiny Boyd repeats the titular lyric over some brooding guitar. The chorus transitions back to metal, and singer Brandon Boyd sings about wanting to redefine the art (sick of painting in black and white) and society around him, but later worries in the chorus about his redefinition: “we painted a picture, now we’re drowning in paint // figure out what the fuck it’s about before the picture we painted chews us up and spits us out”. Sounding like rap metal, we quickly transition to some funk bass for a verse with some more rapped lyrics. “Redefine” – The album’s opener starts with some heavy bass, some guitar licking its chops and some heavyset percussion. Let’s get started (must-listen songs in bold) and follow along on Spotify: One of the few times I’ve enjoyed the fusion of metal, jazz, rock, rap, DJ and alternative in one album. It’s an album that seems to transcend the normal music timeline somewhat, borrowing sounds from the 70s, 80s and 90s and would grab from what would become 2000s alternative rock. Whether it be between genres, methods of making music, or contrast during songs, the album is a hell of a ride for anybody curious about what Incubus was like before they figured out their brand of alt rock they could really sell. involves a lot of music science, or experimentation.

Their second full-length studio album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. So I now take a break from Beck for a little while (though I’ve been listening to a lot of him in anticipation of his new album next week: Morning Light), and move my focus back into the 90s when Incubus was getting very experimental.
